ea-adjacent podcasts I personally recommend

or possibly adjacent of adjacent??

Every couple of months at a minimum I see someone asking for EA Forum posts to be available in audio form, or wishing 80k podcast episodes were somehow even longer(!), or suggesting that I make a podcast. Obviously y’all don’t have enough podcasts in your life. Here are some suggestions for the EA-inclined:

Dear Hank and John

It’s a comedy podcast where two brothers give you dubious advice and other various alternating segments that last a couple years at a time. Hank and John Green inspired the Nerdfighters community, which has a lot of overlap with EA.

It definitely counts as EA-adjacent because episode 2 of the podcast, John gives a brief shout-out to Effective Altruism.

80k After Hours

This podcast is EA-adjacent in the sense that if you met it at a party, it would claim it’s not EA because it has three philosophical critiques of the standard EA positions on issues that would take you a couple years to actually understand the nuances of.

It’s the 80,000 Hours podcast but more in-group with disturbingly jazzy intro music. I feel like an old-timey detective is trying to seduce me every time I listen to it. Currently listening to “Hannah Boettcher on the mental health challenges that come with trying to have a big impact.”

Science vs

With dozens of citations each episode, this is my go-to podcast when I want to get the basics on a topic. I most recently enjoyed “Who Killed Affordable Housing?” which was both fun and informative on a topic I’ve heard a lot of EAs talk about.

Deep Questions with Cal Newport

Cal Newport is a thinker on productivity and technology, and a major influence of early 80,000 Hours advice (he also appeared on their podcast!). His podcast consists of him giving short overviews of his different ideas and answering listener questions.

EAs might enjoy episode 194 “The Surprising Math of Doing Less”. Cal’s a big proponent of prioritisation, and the idea that you’re more likely to achieve great things if you spend your time on a few things at a time than many things at a time.
