In early 2022, Sam Bankman-Fried was a mood. A new EA billionaire driving his Corolla around the Bahamas? Whatās not to like?!
And then in November we found at that heās (allegedly) been stealing customer deposits. After an interview with Kelsey Piper, itās not even obvious if he ever believed in the values he talked about.
Itās a pretty brutal story, one that many of us are still pretty upset about, especially since we still donāt know which EA leaders knew what when. But itās also caught the attention of Hollywood in a big way. There are at least nine film and TV adaptations of SBFās story in the works, and chances are that at least a few of them will feature EA.
Here are the ones Iām most likely to watch:
SBF and the End of Silicon Valley. This might be one of the first to drop - originally slated for Q2 2023, aka now, although Iāve heard nothing recently. Itās also billed to focus heavily on SBFās involvement with Effective Altruism. If it comes out soon, this will be my first watch.
Amazon Studios miniseries. An eight-episode series produced by Joe and Anthony Russo (they make Avengers movies). According to Variety, āmultiple Marvel actorsā have been in discussions about taking roles in the show. I am obsessed with the idea of Will MacAskill being played by Chris Hemsworth and absolutely cannot wait for this one.
Michael Lewis book adaptation. Michael Lewis wrote āThe Big Shortā. He had already spent six months traveling with and interviewing SBF (and Will MacAskill and Toby Ord) for his book before this all went down. Out of all the movies, Iām guessing this will be the most accurate, and focus the most on EA.
Not gonna lie, Iām extremely anxious about both what actually happened and how it will be portrayed. This isnāt how Iād hoped EA would make its big screen debut. But thereās no way Iāll be able to resist watching at least a few of these and posting my hot takes on my Twitter.
What's the reason to believe SBF ate shrimp? There was a fake headline about this but nothing else I'm aware of. I think it's very likely he's vegan (as he claims, https://twitter.com/SBF_FTX/status/1598507551376670721).
